Some African soccer fans living in the U.K.have described  Sir Alex Ferguson, Manager of Manchester United FC of England, who plans to retire from the club at the end of the season as, ‘exceptional person worthy of emulation’.
Ferguson, 71, is billed to step down at the end of the season after serving the club for 26 years.
Some of the African fans who spoke  in reaction to the announced departures, said it was necessary for club managers in Africa to be given similar opportunities to prove themselves.
Mr Joe Kwame, a Ghanaian businessman said: “as Africans, we should learn from the consistency which Manchester United represents, you can see that Ferguson served for 26 years.
“Even though he won many trophies, he had low moments when the club conceded defeats, however, he was not sacked abruptly.
“We are celebrating him today (Wednesday) because someone gave him a chance to become a professional,” Kwame said.
Another fan, Mr Samuel Adeloye, a Nigerian lawyer, stressed the need to promote professionalism in sports, and shun politics, noting, “the major problem we have in African football is that of politics.
“There is so much politics in the selection of players, and those who manage clubs.
“My advise is for those with exceptional talent to be supported, irrespective of their tribe and religion.”
According to Adeloye, in this part of the world, it is only those who fit the  bill that are given such jobs.
The God father syndrome does not work here.
Ferguson while announcing his retirement said: “the decision to retire is one I have thought a great deal about. It is the right time.
“It is important for me to leave the organisation in the best possible shape, and I believe I have done so,”  he added.
In his 26 years career, Ferguson won 13 league titles, two championship crowns, five FA cups, and four league cups. Manchester United is expected to name a successor by the weekend.
