The Vice Chancellor of UCT Dr Max Price sent an e-mail to UCT staff and students detailing how the university's council will meet a week earlier than scheduled to discuss the removal of the Cecil Rhodes statue from the university's premises.

In the e-mail, Price wrote that the UCT council, the university's highest decision-making council, will meet on 8 April to make a final decision on the issue.

This date is reportedly a week earlier than was scheduled and is described, by Price, as "specially called".

This follows a vote made by the UCT Senate, on Friday, that the statue of former colonialist Cecil John Rhodes, which is displayed prominently on the university grounds, should be removed.

A student poured sewage on the statue on 9 March and a mass student protest, calling for the statue to be taken down, took place on 12 March.

Students have also staged a sit-in at one of the university's management buildings, for the past week, demanding that the statue be removed. Culled from: enca
