Police authorities have continued to maintain a strong presence on a piece of privately-owned land that was invaded earlier on Monday. The owner of the land, Denel, had got an eviction order to remove the people who illegally invaded his land, erecting shacks on it.
Informal settlers had invaded the piece of land in Khayelitsha on Monday, resisted eviction initially when authorities stepped in but they succeeded in removing the illegal invaders though not without reports of violence. At some point, they started throwing stones on passing vehicles and even set some ablaze.
Authorities in Cape Town have since opened a criminal case against two Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) officials who led the land grab. The EFF on Tuesday informed city officials that illegal land occupations would continue as it formed part of the party's mandate.
The council however condemned the land grabs and urged private land owners to be vigilant. They also asked residents to report such incidents to the council
